The concept of maintenance instead of repair has been recognized by many truck drivers, but truck maintenance is not simple. The regular replacement of various oils alone is a headache. In the previous issues, we have introduced engine oil. Today, this issue of Tips on Truck Parts will introduce gear oil and related maintenance issues.
Gear oil is also called tail gear oil. It is an important lubricant made of petroleum lubricant base oil or synthetic lubricant, with extreme pressure anti-wear agent and oiliness agent. It is mainly used for various gear transmission devices, such as transmissions and drive axles.
Gear oil mainly lubricates various gear devices, which can help the machine dissipate heat, reduce gear wear, extend gear life, prevent gear rust, and improve transmission efficiency during vehicle driving.
As an important part of power parts, the gear end faces of the gearbox and the drive rear axle are under great pressure. Once the gear oil film is broken, the gear end faces will touch directly. Under the pressure of high torque, it is easy to cause damage to the gears of truck parts, resulting in shaking, abnormal noise and other problems in the drive axle.
The replacement cycle of gear oil is generally around 60,000 kilometers. It must be replaced in time before the expiration date. Similar to engine oil, gear oil also has its own classification.
The performance classification of APL (American Petroleum Institute) is generally used internationally, and gear oil is divided into five basic types: GL-1, GL-2, GL-3, GL-4, and GL-5.
